The Mayor of Kythira, Mr. Efstratios Charchalakis. Speaking in a television interview, prompted by the recent initiative of the Metropolitan of Kythira and Antikythira, Mr. Seraphim, to donate his personal government allowance to support professionals who remain on the island, Mr. Charhalakis provided a «snapshot» of the situation, sounding the alarm regarding the institutional role of the state.
The mayor of Kythira revealed that the municipality has been implementing a systematic subsidy policy for years, using only its own resources (KAP) and not any special government grants.
«The benefit policy for these categories cannot be implemented by local governments. These employees are backed by entire ministries (Health, Education, Public Order). These ministries should be the ones paying, rather than shifting the burden onto municipalities, which are forced to pay out of their own pockets, at the expense of other needs.», Mr. Charchalakis emphasized.
