The title of today's post is
the
«TONIGHT, IT'S GOING TO BE THAILAND».
………………………………………..
was one of the main slogans of the students of the polytechnic, as shown in the picture
but why?;
………………………………………..
Thailand (the old Siam) had
military dictatorship that had ruled the country since 1963, led by Marshal Thanom Kitikahorn.
………………………………………..
but the hoodlums, thick-headed and ignorant as they were,
and the idea that they know everything,
they have messed up the economy
and
have brought the country to a desperate situation
………………………………………..
and as we all know, poverty brings complaining
………………………………………..
and as if that wasn't enough, the authoritarianism was growing
………………………………………..
the most progressive part of the country are the students who, despite the
their traditional conservatism
understand
See
and feel what's going on and where the country is going
………………………………………..
universities are being transformed into places of political ferment
………………………………………..
so a culture, a collective consciousness is formed
that THEY (the students) have the honour and responsibility
as a new generation, to change the situation
………………………………………..
timidly - timidly some people have been making small attempts to take to the streets since the spring of 1973,
demanding democratisation, but the police forces easily disperse them
………………………………………..
On 6 October 1973, on the occasion of a small demonstration of 20 students in favour of constitutional freedoms,
the police proceeded to arrest
11 of them,
while gatherings of more than 5 people were banned.
………………………………………..
was the straw that broke the camel's back.
………………………………………..
started to have demonstrations EVERY DAY.
and they were getting bigger and bigger every day in volume and pulse
………………………………………..
soon the students joined the dance of protests
and as you can understand the concentrations skyrocketed in terms of volume and pulse
………………………………………..
Until October 13, 1973,
Nearly 500,000 people demonstrated in downtown Bangkok.
It is to this day the largest political rally ever recorded in the history of the country.
………………………………………..
The police tried to disperse them by firing tear gas and soon
the whole city was literally turned into a battlefield.
the situation became uncontrollable.
………………………………………..
At dawn the next morning, October 14,
the regime is taking the armoured vehicles on the streets
(ring a bell?)
………………………………………..
shortly afterwards the army opened fire on the protesters, killing at least 77 of them and injuring hundreds of others,
while
paratroopers occupied Thamasat University, which was the bastion of the anti-dictatorship student uprising.
………………………………………..
Nevertheless, the young people of Thailand did not bend, did not cave in.
They continued there, fighting all day
………………………………………..
Faced with the criticality of the situation and feeling the very foundations of his throne creaking, King Bhumibol of Thailand,
decided to withdraw its support for the dictatorial regime
and pressures Thanom to resign as prime minister,
putting in its place the conservative one,
but sympathetic to the student masses,
Dean of the university, Shania Thamasak.
………………………………………..
on 16 October, the dictator, accompanied by his son, Colonel Narog Kitikahorn, commander of the riot police,
and his father-in-law, Marshal Prapat Sarousathian.
- «the three most hated people in Thailand»-,
secretly left the country.
is the end of the dictatorship in Thailand that shocked the world
and showed the way...
………………………………………..
about a month later,
the inmates of Metsovio will shout the historic
«TONIGHT, IT'S GOING TO BE THAILAND».
