Strike at 11 airports in Germany - Thousands of flights cancelled

Around 25,000 security workers at 11 major airports have been on strike since the early hours of this morning, with thousands of flights at risk of cancellation today. The trade union Ver.di has called a 24-hour strike, demanding 2.80 euro/hour increases and higher overtime bonuses. According to employers, meeting the demands would mean additional costs of €250 million for this year alone.

Today's mobilisations concern Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Bremen, Bremen, Hannover, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Leipzig, Leipzig, Erfurt and Dresden airports, while only Munich is the only major airport in operation. Screening of workers, passengers, cargo and baggage is very limited to none, depending on the participation of workers in the strike. For example, all take-offs from Berlin, Hamburg and Stuttgart airports have already been cancelled. In total, it is estimated that more than 11 000 scheduled flights will not take place today.
