The agricultural mobilizations are entering an escalation trajectory, following the decisions taken at the national meeting of farmers in Malgara. Representatives from 62 agricultural blockades unanimously decided to hold 48-hour blockades on key roads in the country, starting on Thursday 8 January, immediately after Epiphany.
According to the announcements, the blockades will affect the entire national road network, namely the Athens-Thessaloniki National Road, the Egnatia and Ionian Road, the Athens perimeter, the Peloponnese road network, as well as the Larissa-Kozani National Road in Melouna.
The president of the Unitarian Federation of Agricultural Associations of Larissa, Rizos Maroudas, spoke of «rebellion and not just mobilization», stressing that farmers do not intend to retreat if there are no written commitments from the government to meet their demands.
At the same time, the farmers sent a message to the government not to proceed with the signing of the Mercosur agreement, warning of further escalation if their demands are not met.
