An unknown shipwreck has been uncovered by research in the Aegean seas. According to researcher Costas Thoktaridis, the wreck was found at a depth of 110 meters west of Kythnos and the first evidence indicates that there had been an explosion in the bow and the stern had collapsed.
«The general picture and the particular shipbuilding of the wreck, which does not have any holds, indicates a very old and probably a warship», Kostas Thoktaridis says, who, after the underwater survey, will move on to the historical one in order to find evidence that will allow its identification.
From the underwater search with an underwater drone (R.O.V.) it is now clear that the total length of the wreck is about 40 metres. The wreck has a low profile of only 3 metres high and the short distance between the transverse frame lines of the frame lines that form the skeleton of the vessel is striking.
The bow of the wreck is pointing north. At a distance of 30 metres from the stern of the wreck, debris was found widely scattered on the seabed, giving the impression that a very powerful explosion was caused on board the ship when it was on the surface. Sheet metal from the sides and from the deck has been ejected from the wreck. From the damage caused it is estimated that it sank too quickly.
