Agia Pelagia at the heart of the Accountability of the Region of Attica

Critical questions about water supply and basic infrastructure on the islands of Attica. The internal water supply network project in the large settlement of Agia Pelagia was raised.

With reference to the Agia Pelagia Kythera, held on Thursday 8 January 2026, at 15:30, the 6th Special Accountability Session of the Regional Council of Attica, in the context of the discussion on the lack of critical infrastructure projects of self-sufficiency in the island municipalities of the Region of Attica (P.E. Islands).

In the first item of the special meeting of the Regional Council, the regional councillor Ms Kazakou (Atticus Circle of Cooperation and Trust) raised the issue of lack of critical self-sufficiency infrastructure projects in the island municipalities of Attica Region.

The question highlighted the structural needs of the islands - from Salamina, Aegina and Poros to Kythera and Antikythera - in water supply, sanitation, waste management and energy efficiency, especially during the summer months when the population is increasing. The lack of a coherent self-sufficiency strategy in the 300+1 projects programme was highlighted and the following points were made cancellations or delays in major projects (biological treatment, desalination, water supply networks), with indicative references to Spetses, Poros, Aegina and Kythera (Agia Pelagia). More specifically, for Agia Pelagia, it was mentioned that under the current administration of the Region, the internal water supply construction project was dismantled.

In his reply, the Regional Governor argued that there is comprehensive planning, which is implemented through the call for the programme Holistic Water and Urban Wastewater Management (NSRF), with a total budget of approximately EUR 35 million. He clarified that the projects were not definitively disposed of, but were «temporarily removed» from the programme due to new European maturity requirements, changes in the institutional framework and - above all - the lack of managerial competence the technical services of the island municipalities.

As he said, institutional support solutions are being considered (e.g. assuming the role of implementing body by EYDAP or another central body), while he presented updated project picture: progress in biological treatment (Agistri, Hydra, Poros, Methana, Petses), upgrades and extensions in Kythera, as well as a commitment of funding EUR 3,1 million for the internal water supply network of Agia Pelagia, with an extension of the programme contract until 2027.

As pointed out by the head of the opposition George Ioakimidis, the case of Agia Pelagia shows that the island municipalities of Attica are still being treated in a fragmented manner and without a strategic plan. Basic infrastructure, he stressed, is not a luxury but a prerequisite for social cohesion, tourism sustainability and the very functioning of the islands.
