«Farewell to a Gentleman with a Capital »G«»: Stratos Charhalakis’s “Goodbye” to Kostas Mariatos

His deep sorrow over the The passing of Kostas Mariatos, The Mayor of Kythira, Efstratios Charchalakis, in a moving, personal post. The doctor passed away in Athens on his name day, leaving behind a remarkable legacy both for the local community and for the island’s local government. Read the Mayor’s post:

A FAREWELL TO A GENTLEMAN WITH THE INITIAL ‘K"

On the day of his name day, Kostas Mariatos, who served for decades as a surgeon at Kythira Hospital, passed away in Athens. For me, he was a true mentor throughout my entire career in public service, and I owe my decision to run for mayor of Kythira in 2014 largely to him. He is a man of integrity in every respect—honest first and foremost with himself, and both fair and strict at the same time.

A lover of history and Latin, he knew Cicero almost by heart! For many years before I became involved with the municipality, his home in Agia Anastasia was for me not only a place of gracious hospitality, but a true refuge.

In 2014, he ran on my ticket and was elected to the City Council. Prior to that, he had served as chair of the Local Property Committee, an institution he honored and respected perhaps more than anyone else. I learned a great deal from him.

I bid him farewell with mixed feelings: the human sorrow that, little by little, personalities of this caliber are passing away. And the joyful certainty that the Righteous Judge will welcome him into the Light, where the righteous belong.

I extend my sincere condolences to his wife, his children, his siblings, and his loved ones.
