Complaint about reduced staffing on ships

The tragedy of Tempi brings to the surface the serious problems in other transport sectors, which are of course known to the government.

The Panhellenic Seamen's Federation (PNO) reiterates the controversial issue of reduced organic composition on ships of all categories, an issue for which seafarers' unions have been complaining for a long time, directly raising the issue of safety for passengers, crews and ships, due to the intensification of staff work.

The Secretary General of the Federation Emmanuel Tsikalakis in a letter to the Minister of Shipping Yannis Plakiotakis points out the need to institutionalize a new legislative framework that fully meets the current real needs of ships and maritime work with a view to safety.

It notes that in the constant joint checks carried out by the federation there are constant breaches of the maximum employment limit for crews, with a predominant position in the specialities of cabin crew, cooks and financial officers. «The issue of reduced and special compositions has reached the point of no return,» it stresses.
