The subject of Maria Patramani’s* study concerns one instance of piracy among so many others that occurred during the turbulent, for the inhabitants of the Aegean islands, period of the Russo-Turkish War between the years 1768 and 1774. This act of piracy took place on the island of Sifnos in 1770 and involved the hijacking of a Sifnian boat by the crew of a Slavonian pirate, followed by its transport and illegalsale of the boat in Kythira. The boat’s owner was the Sifnian shipowner Konstantinos Gion, and the pirate Sklavounos was a certain George Lucassevich
The case was brought to light by documentary evidence uncovered by Maria Patramani following a recent archival search at the Kythira Historical Archive. It consists of a small collection of nine documents that make up the case file, which had been compiled specifically for the examination of the case by the competent Venetian authorities in Kythira.
