“A copy of the Mona Lisa ”under the hammer" at an auction in Paris

A faithful copy of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, dating back more than 400 years, will go under the hammer at an auction in Paris next Tuesday, months after another copy of one of the world's most recognisable portraits sold for a record price.

This particular copy dates back to around 1600 and looks so much like the original that it is as if the artist had close access to Leonardo's version, auction house Artcurial pointed out.

It is estimated that the copy will raise 150,000-200,000 euros.

«Mona Lisa is the most beautiful woman in painting,» says Artcurial's auction specialist Mathieu Fournier, while the painting is on public display ahead of the auction. «Everyone wants to have a high-quality version of the Mona Lisa.».
