Yannis Lagos: Arrested at his home in Brussels

The Belgian authorities have arrested Yannis Lagos, convicted for directing the Golden Dawn criminal organisation, after his immunity was lifted.

Shortly after the plenary session of the European Parliament voted in favour of lifting of the immunity of the Chrysasygite Yannis Lagos, and a European arrest warrant was issued against him, the man convicted of running a criminal organisation was arrested at his home on Brussels.

The Greek MEP even tweeted from inside the police car, sending a message in view of Easter And with a hashtag... #AstraZeneca, so no 30-something will miss it.

The Hare and the... “red ad”

Earlier, the issuance of a “red notice of international search” against the convict was initiated. Essentially, if the MEP is arrested in a European country, the European arrest warrant is activated and he comes to Greece. If he is arrested in a country outside the European Union, then Greece is informed on the basis of the ”red notice“ and will in turn initiate extradition procedures in accordance with the inter-state agreements in force.

In any case, his extradition to our country also depends on whether Hare will appeal against the arrest warrant, as he has the right to do. If he appeals, the procedure can take up to two months

The trial of Golden Dawn

It is recalled that the Three-Member Court of Appeal for Criminal Cases decided on 7 October 2020 to condemn the criminal organisation Golden Dawn, including MEP Yannis Lagos, refusing to give a suspensive effect to the execution of his sentence.

Specifically, on 13 September 2019, he was sentenced to eight months' suspended imprisonment for the attack on the Synergy social space in 2013, while on 7 October 2020 he was convicted for his activity with Golden Dawn and charged with setting up a criminal organisation. He was given a sentence of 13 years and 8 months in prison without parole.

He had fled the European Parliament's headquarters on the day of the Brussels decision to avoid being arrested by the Greek authorities.

The other Golden Eagle who was convicted and still hasn't ended up in prison, Christos Pappas, still wanted.

Upon hearing the verdict on Golden Dawn, thousands who had gathered outside the Court of Appeal on 7 October, broke into applause and cheers.
