The country's retail turnover rose by 2.5 billion euros in the second quarter of this year, after a 400 million euro increase in June.
Based on ELSTAT data, the turnover of all retail trade enterprises in the second quarter of 2021 amounted to 13.5 billion euros, an increase of 22.91 TtP3T compared to the second quarter of 2020, where it had stood at 10.99 billion euros and an increase of 23.81 TtP3T compared to the first quarter of 2021, which had stood at 10.91 billion euros.
The activities that have shown the greatest growth are:
*Retail trade of watches and jewellery in specialised shops, 108.5%. Includes retail sale of watches and jewellery in specialised stores.
*Sale of other motor vehicles, 107.7%.
On the contrary, the activities that showed a decrease are:
*’Other retail trade, except in stores, stalls or markets, 5.7%. Includes direct sales or sales by door-to-door salesmen (door-to-door, door-to-door, hawkers), sales from vending machines, direct sales of fuel (heating oil, firewood, etc.) delivered to the customer's premises, auction activities not conducted in stores (retail sales, off-line) and retail trade (other than in stores) by authorised agents.
*Retail sale of fruit and vegetables in specialised stores, 1.2%.
For the retail trade sector enterprises with double-entry bookkeeping obligations, for which data are available on a monthly basis, turnover in June 2021 amounted to €2.9 billion, an increase of 16% compared to June 2020, which stood at €2.5 billion, and an increase of 10.2% compared to May 2021, which stood at €2.7 billion.
The activities that have shown the greatest growth are:
*Retail trade of watches and jewellery in specialised shops, 90.8%.
*Sale of other motor vehicles, 85,9%.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, the activities that showed the largest decrease are:
*Retail trade of books in specialised stores, 18.7%.
*Retail sale of textiles in specialised stores, 14.2%.
Based on the turnover data of the final 2018 Business Statistics Register, the 10 largest classes of economic activity in the retail sector are:
-Sale of cars and light motor vehicles
-Maintenance and repair of motor vehicles
-Wholesale of motor vehicle parts and accessories
-Retail trade in non-specialised stores selling mainly food, beverages or tobacco
-‘Other retail sale in non-specialised stores
-Retail trade of motor fuels in specialised shops
-Retail trade of hardware, paints and glass in specialised shops
-Retail sale of electrical household appliances in specialised stores
-Retail sale of clothing in specialised stores, and
-Pharmaceuticals in specialised shops.
Of these, the activities that showed the largest increase in turnover in the second quarter of 2021 compared to the corresponding quarter of 2020 are:
*Motor vehicle maintenance and repair, 104.7%.
*Retail sale of clothing in specialised stores, 96.8%.
The activities that showed the smallest increase are:
*Pharmaceuticals in specialised shops, 3.7%.
*Retail trade in non-specialised stores selling mainly food, beverages or tobacco, 2.1%.
At the same time, the activities that showed the largest increase in turnover in June 2021 compared to June 2020 are:
*Retail sale of clothing in specialised stores, 56.9%.
*Motor vehicle maintenance and repair, 53.6%.
While, the activity that showed a decline is Other retail trade in non-specialised stores, with a drop of 12.2%.
