The deposit 1.3 million citizen signatures in favour of revision of the Constitution and of waiver of parliamentary immunity for criminal offences was held today by Maria Karystianou, president of the Association of Relatives of Victims of the accident in Tempi. As she had previously announced, she came to Parliament, submitting the voluminous petition to the Parliamentary Secretariat.
«We want impunity to end. We await what the Parliament will do with our request», Karystianou told the parliamentary editors, noting the importance of the request supported by more than one million citizens.
This mobilisation aims to the repeal of the articles of the Constitution that grant protection and immunity to politicians, even when they face serious criminal charges, such as those attributed to the tragic accident in Tempe, but also for cases such as the OPEKEPE scandal.
In a previous public statement, Maria Karystianou had underlined that «7 July 2025 marks the restoration of democracy in Greece». He also insisted that the impunity for politicians has no place in a favoured democracy and how «neither the law, nor morality, nor the citizens will tolerate this cover-up any longer».
«They themselves will never check their enormous criminal responsibilities. Tempe, OPEKEPE, and so many other scandals that remain buried. They are playing us for fools», stressed Mrs. Karystianou, calling on political and social vigilance.
«It is time for us, the citizens, to get active. For justice to be done. To take back the oxygen that belongs to us», he concluded.
In detail the post of Maria Karystianou:
«July 7, 2025, marks the restoration of democracy in Greece.
On Monday, 07.07.2025 we submit to the Parliament the one million three hundred thousand (1.300.000) signatures collected for the revision of the Constitution and the abolition of the immunity of politicians for their criminal responsibilities.
The impunity of politicians is not in accordance with morality, the law or democracy.
It is abundantly clear that they will not control their huge criminal responsibilities (Tempi, OPEKEPE and how many other scandals that are still buried and have yet to come to light). We are being fooled!!!
That is why we, the CITIZENS, must become active for the common good and for JUSTICE to finally come to the country!
To take back the OXYGEN that belongs to us!».
