With ten votes in favour - including that of Russia - and five abstentions (UK, France, Greece, Greece, Slovenia, Denmark), the US draft resolution on Ukraine entitled “The Road to Peace” was adopted by the UN Security Council, marking the first resolution adopted since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Deadlock on amendments
The three amendments proposed by the European countries were not adopted, two of them because of the Russian veto. However, the two amendments proposed by Russia were also rejected as the European countries did not vote in favour.
The US resolution
The US Resolution reads as follows: “Mourning the tragic loss of human life in the Russia-Ukraine conflict reiterates that the primary purpose of the United Nations, as expressed in the Charter of the United Nations, is the maintenance of international peace and security and the peaceful settlement of disputes. We urge a speedy cessation of hostilities and a lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia.”.
The American statement
“The United States sincerely appreciates the support of Council members for this resolution and welcomes the action, the first taken by the Council in three years on Ukraine to decisively call for an end to the conflict. This resolution puts us on the road to peace. It is a first step, but it is a crucial step of which we should all be proud. Now we must use it to build a peaceful future for Ukraine, Russia and the international community,” said the Rev. In the meantime, we need to build on the success of our efforts to make the world a better place for Ukraine and the region," said Deputy Permanent Representative of the United States Ambassador Dorothy Shea.
