As you know, in English, the international language of the world, Turkey is referred to as Turkey. But those who have travelled to the country or have any contact with it, have noticed that in Turkish the country is referred to as Türkiye (you hear that characteristic e at the end).
This is the version that Erdogan wants to establish internationally, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic in 2023.
Even products manufactured in Turkey will, as the government wishes, be marked "made in Türkiye".
There is, among other things, another reason why Erdogan wants to change the international name of his country. In English, the word turkey means turkey, while in slang it often corresponds to offensive expressions. This, according to government doctrine, must be changed.
