SYRIZA: A green revolution is necessary

The proposal of the opposition for the climate change, is to be presented on Thursday, 03/06, at 20:00, by the President of SYRIZA - P.S., Alexis Tsipras.

Mr.Tsipras' speech will move along two axes, with specific positions at the national level and an analysis of international correlations. All this, in the light of the historical necessity for a «green revolution», which is filtered through the return of the US factor in international agreements and the perceived timidity of Europe's mainstream circles for radical breakthroughs in the field of climate change.

Another key element of SYRIZA's political positions that is expected to be reflected in Alexis Tsipras' speech is the link between the proposals on the environment and the element of social justice and the development process.

As noted by the opposition «Environmental Quality, Fair Society and Strong Economy can only become a reality together and together. If one of the three is missing, we will fail in all of them.The real issue in economic terms is not whether we should implement the green transition but how to do it. We need to ensure that the income of the low and middle classes is not reduced. Instead, the green transition must be used to create more and better jobs for workers, more and better opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises and the self-employed.

At the same time, it is noted that the opportunity given «with the resources of the Recovery Fund, the new NSRF and the CAP for a new «green» growth model for a stronger and more resilient economy» should be exploited. Finally, it is pointed out that it is not only climate neutrality, i.e. limiting the impact on the environment, but also the existence of healthy ecosystems.

On the institutional «for the time being», it should be noted that SYRIZA is in favour of a new climate law and immediately. A topic that Alexis Tsiras is expected to address in his speech. However, he prefers this to be the result of social processes and not of political agreements at the summit level. A particularly important element of the new law is - according to the opposition - to «introduce the climate and environmental footprint in all financial and development tools».

The event

Following the model of the respective events of SYRIZA's position presentation, the event will start with a speech by Alexis Tsipras and will be followed by a detailed dialogue with the participation of representatives of organisations not organisationally related to the opposition, and important environmental organisations. The debate will of course be attended by the relevant members of SYRIZA.

Speakers include Katerina Andrikopoulou-Sakorafa, Co-Representative of the Ecological Greens and Member of the Political Secretariat of the movement. Also Nikos Charalambidis, Director General of the Greek Office of Greenpeace. The President of the Hellenic Federation of Commerce and Entrepreneurship George Karanikas, the President of the Association of Industries of Northern Greece Athanasios Savvakis and the Mayor of Tilos, Maria Kamma, will also speak. Particularly noteworthy and the presence of university students who will take the floor and Manolis Plionis will speak. Professor of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Director & Chairman of the Board of the National Observatory, as well as Nikos Farantouris, Professor of the Jean Monnet European Chair in European Competition, Energy and Transport Law. Also present will be the members of SYRIZA who have the responsibility for the sector, such as Socrates Famellos, former Minister, Deputy Minister for the Environment, Pete Perka, Deputy Minister for the Environment and Rena Dourou, responsible for Climate Change, Environment and Energy. MEP Petros Kokkalis will also intervene.
