The Professor Nikos Sipsas expressed his strong concern about the mutations of the Coronaille after the first case of South Africa recorded in Thessaloniki. According to him «the mutation (of the UK) is everywhere from Crete to Northern Greece.».
He even noted that «for the African mutation there is strong evidence that vaccines are less effective».
So, Mr Sipsas told the SKAI, there's a possibility that the virus could overcome immunity and that would mean going back to the Wuhan era in a new virus.
«If, for example, the South African strain prevails in Greece, we have a new virus and the vaccines don't cover us» added the member of the Committee of Experts of Lt. He added that the member of the Committee of Experts of the expert committee of the Health Department of the Ministry of Health.
Asked specifically about Pfizer's vaccine, he pointed out that «to date the company has cited laboratory data that the vaccine is effective so we probably shouldn't be worried.».
As he said, «there is a risk in February that the epidemic could accelerate if two conditions apply: to reach 30% the cases of mutant strains in Greece and to confirm the increase in transmissibility».
According to Nikos Sypsa, «the increase in January for which we do not have so many good explanations may be due to mutation of the coronavirus».
As for the next steps, the Infectious Disease professor said everything is on the table «from the universal lockdown scenario and from there all the scenarios of closing schools and more.».
