- On its maiden voyage, the ocean liner Titanic, a marvel of engineering for the time, sets sail from Britain with 2,200 people on board. In an ironic twist of fate, this ship would be called “unsinkable”. On this maiden voyage, the Titanic carries the cream of British and American society, aristocrats and adventurers. But it will never reach its destination. Halfway there, it hits a passing iceberg and begins to take on water. But the boats can only hold 1,200 people, and it's not long before panic sets in
Based on Walter Lord's best-selling bestseller of the same name, a detailed historical investigation into the sinking of the Titanic, this British extravaganza is a stunning recreation of the real-life stories that took place on the most famous shipwreck in history.
A grand production that impresses from the first frame, Roy Baker's film manages to seamlessly combine emotion and sensationalism, choosing to tell real stories that are effortlessly moving, and deliver a historically accurate representation of the sinking of the ocean liner. Thoughtful direction, aided by precise production, manages to put the viewer at the heart of the events. At the time of the sinking, the camera wanders around the deck, among the passengers, inside the ship, giving a vivid picture of the panic and despair that prevailed. It is one of those rare moments when cinema is transformed into a lived experience, and the viewer feels as if they are there.
This 1958 classic masterpiece is proven to have been James Cameron's main inspiration for his now-classic Titanic. In fact, Cameron was so enthusiastic that he “borrowed” entire scenes, dialogue and characters from this film (even the role played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who appears as a minor character in the film).
The film won several awards, including a Golden Globe, and is remembered as the one that sparked interest in disaster films.
