A new episode in the political confrontation in Kythira took place on the evening of Thursday, August 22, when the former Deputy Regional Governor of the Islands, Takis Hatziparos, publicly intervened in a post by Mayor Efstratios Charhalakis with a fiery comment. The comment was posted at 10 p.m. on the mayor's Facebook profile, remained there for a short time, and was then deleted.
The Kythera.News caught and captured the moment.
The peaks of Hatzipetrou
In his comment, Mr. Hatziparos accused the mayor of «tragic ingratitude,» noting that:
- During the term of Regional Governor Rena Dourou, «most of the projects in Kythira and Antikythira» were carried out, totaling more than 25 million euros, despite the conditions of the memoranda.
- These projects also included preliminary studies for the expansion of the airport.
- Important projects from that period are still in progress, such as the project at the Observatory in collaboration with the National Observatory of Athens.
- The mayor has a «duty and obligation» to proceed with the unveiling of the monument to the sponge divers in Antikythira, something which, according to him, remains pending.
With sharp words, Mr. Hatziveros reminded everyone that «Ingratitude is a deadly sin.», sending a clear message about what he considers to be the underestimation of the contribution made by the then Administration of the Attica Region.
The comment «disappeared.»
Shortly afterwards, the comment was no longer visible. However, Mr. Hatziparos, in communication with Kythera.News, clarified that he did not remove it himself, implying that the deletion was made by Mayor Charhalakis himself, who probably did not like the criticism.
Another episode in the confrontation
Hatzipetrou's statement comes in the wake of the fierce public confrontation that has recently erupted between the mayor and the SYRIZA party in Kythira. The comment, even though it was taken down, highlights the depth of the political conflict and the different narratives about who really contributed to the island's projects and development.
