The work of the Kostas Tsalta, published under the title «The Russian presence in Kythera in the years 1798-1807» in the Honorary Volume for Professor Nikos Petrochilos (Homo Sum; Humani nil a me Alienum Puto), studies the presence of Russian Empire in Kythera in the period 1798-1807, focusing on the political, social and cultural implications Russian domination of the island. At a time geopolitical upheavals in the Eastern Mediterranean, Kythera has emerged as a strategic point between the Ionian and the Aegean Sea.
The study examines:
- the Russia's relations with the local population,
- the influence of the Orthodox Church,
- the changes in administration and the structure of society after the departure of Democratic French.
In addition, it is analysed:
- ο role of the Russian Empire in the creation of the State of Ionian Islands,
- as well as the wider implications of its presence on the policy and cultural identity of Kythera.
