A new important development has emerged in the issue of wind farms in Kythira, just a few days after the decision of the Secretary General for the Natural Environment and Water, Petros Varelidis, which approved the Special Environmental Study (SES 7a) for the Natura 2000 areas of Kythira and Antikythira.
As reported by Citizens' Movement of Kythira – Dynamo Kythira, posted by the Ministry of Environment and Energy and the detailed zoning map, which clearly sets out the new protection boundaries. According to this, the Natura network area in northwest of Kythira, where two wind farms had been located, is now classified as Nature Protection Zone (ZPZ 02).
The only exceptions are two smaller areas around the old settlements of Kroteria and Rodafni, which are classified as Sustainable Natural Resource Management Zone (SNRMZ 04). This decision is of crucial importance, as in the ZPF the use of land for Renewable Energy Sources is expressly prohibited. This means that 21 of the 30 wind turbines planned by TERNA Energy cannot be installed, which overturns the project design and institutionally strengthens the protection of the area.
The publication of the map is considered by local authorities to be a A significant victory for nature and society in Kythira, as it sends a clear message that areas of high ecological value cannot be converted into industrial energy zones.
