Everything You Need to Know About Hotels in Heraklion, Crete

Crete is admittedly one of the number 1 destinations, not only in Greece, especially for summer holidays. Many reasons have contributed to this, the main ones being the large size of the island, hence the many options, and especially its incomparable natural landscape. It is somewhat “unfair” to say that one would go on holiday in Crete, as it is almost impossible to go around the whole island or stay in more than two different prefectures in ten days. So, it is more appropriate and accurate to specify the place to the person you are talking to, e.g. “we are going to Chania in the summer”, or “we are looking for hotels in Heraklion” etc.

Chania or Heraklion? In which part of Crete should I book a hotel?;

Chania or Heraklion? Rethymno or Agios Nikolaos? These questions seem like eternal dilemmas and the smartest thing one can do before making a hotel reservation is a thorough research on the internet. What type of traveler one is determines where to stay in Crete, and fortunately the island has plenty of options for all types. Whether you're a nature lover, a food lover, a water sports enthusiast or a history enthusiast, you'll find the perfect strategic location to stay on your next trip to Crete. Of course, keep in mind that Rethymno and Agios Nikolaos are the calmest and most family friendly places, not lacking in beauty and interest, and that Chania and Heraklion have a vibrant nightlife and attract young people from all over the world.

Heraklion Crete, Somewhat Underprivileged Other Super Friendly for Visitors

Chania, Chania, Chania... you hear everywhere that it is by far the most beautiful prefecture of Crete, and perhaps to some extent it is true. But when it comes to summer holidays, the statistics show otherwise...as Heraklion seems to be the winner. But what is it that makes Heraklion so special? There are several reasons: lively and crowded (in a good way), beautiful historical centre, countless shops, restaurants and bars, top archaeological sites (Knossos, Phaistos), beautiful beaches, super popular seaside resorts with Hersonissos being the top one, good transport network, airport and port (the largest) and of course countless hotels.

Hotels in Heraklion Crete for Every Pocket

Now as far as accommodation in Heraklion is concerned, if you end up visiting, you won't have much trouble. The city has a large number of rooms, studios and hotels for all budgets. We've done a little research and here are some indicative accommodation prices for the first week of August:

Functional Studios

We start from a simple studio ten minutes walk from the city centre. Such a studio will cost you about 38-40 euros a night. Of course don't expect to see anything special in decoration, these are very simple rooms with beds and bathrooms, nor of services like breakfast or room service, at most it has free wifi. But for a group of friends who are not interested in anything romantic it is a fine choice.

2-3 Star Hotels

We continue with slightly more upscale rooms in 2-3 star hotels. Again about a ten minute walk from the historic centre in these hotels you can find free Wifi, air-conditioned rooms with private balconies, TV and telephone, double glazed windows and private bathrooms. Also, the majority of this category in hotels in Heraklion Crete provide a 24-hour front desk service and services for organising tours and car rental. For such a room you will not have to pay more than 40 - 55 euro (early booking).

2-3 Star Hotels

Apartments for Families

If you are planning a family holiday or a holiday with several people, we suggest you take a look at the apartments for rent. In Heraklion you will find several from 35 - 50 euro, provided of course that you book early as they are becoming very popular. Apartments usually have 1-2 bedrooms with bunk beds and sofa beds, private bathroom and of course an equipped kitchen.

The Luxury Hotels in Heraklion Crete

Finally, this city could not be without 4 and 5 star hotels with luxurious rooms and high quality services. For those who can spend from 140-150 to 400-450 euros a night (with breakfast of course) Heraklion Crete has some very remarkable ones. Of course, in such an accommodation the level of your holiday is upgraded as the services provided are aimed at facilitating your stay but also to offer you experiences (relaxation, tranquility, gastronomy, rejuvenation, etc.) that will be unforgettable.

Whatever you choose, whichever town or village, whichever category of accommodation you stay in, one thing is certain: Crete will not only not disappoint you but will make you want to visit again!
