Russula sanguinaria (Schumach.) Rauschert (1989)
Syn. Russula sanguinea Bull.
Fr.Roussoula the blood-coloured
A fairly common mushroom, it grows in coniferous forests from autumn to spring. Its cap can reach 10 cm in diameter. It is initially curved and as the mushroom matures it becomes flat to hollow. The colour is often darker at the top of the cap while the dense whitish lamellae become cream to yellowish at maturity. It has a light fruit smell and a rather bitter and pungent taste. Not edible.
The name of the genus comes from the Latin russus = red while the characteristic adjective comes from sanguis, sanguinis = blood, blood-coloured
