Karavas: Cultural associations report threats and blackmail over drilling

The two cultural associations of Karavas, Kythira, «Omorfos Karavas» and «Portokalia Karavas,» issued a joint statement denouncing threats and blackmail against residents who oppose the new drilling. As they point out, the village stood united in its efforts to prevent a potential environmental disaster, but instead of dialogue, it was met with threats of arrest. The associations call for continued collective action and declare their determination to defend the environment and the beauty of their land. The statement follows:

Our village of Karava still has water. The springs and streams continue to beautify our lives despite climate change and often destructive human intervention. With this in mind, the villagers have been trying for months to get information, find solutions, and reach an agreement with the municipal authorities. However, the latter seems to be impossible.

Discussions, rallies, and requests for dialogue fell on deaf ears.

Over the last two days, the entire village, not just a minority, has supported the effort to avert a potential disaster, even at the last minute. Unfortunately, however, we have reached the point where the villagers are being blackmailed with threats of being left without water and arrested. Is it true that the residents of our village cannot protest and risk being arrested?;

All of this is unprecedented and raises questions. Who do these practices serve? Who dug them up and where did they come from?;

It is not our intention to engage in petty politics. After all, it is well known that both of our associations have supporters from all factions, parties, etc. However, both cultural associations of Karava strongly express our concern about the way in which not only the peaceful protest but also the sincere concern of the residents of our village is being treated.

We declare that we will continue to strengthen dialogue through our actions. We will continue to work for the good of our region. We will continue to act collectively and we are willing to contribute to any initiative for the protection of the environment and the beauty of Karava.

The associations:
