At a time when Kythera claims an active role in regional planning and attracting resources, the Region of Attica, in the context of the package of 280+1 projects presented this year by the Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias, includes four major projects on the island, with a horizon of implementation until 2027.
Of the four projects, both concerning the River, the largest settlement of Kythera, while the other two are aimed at strengthening critical welfare and agricultural production infrastructure.
1. Overall regeneration of Kythera River
- Implementing Agency: New Metropolitan Attica
- Funding: National envelope of the Public Investment Programme (PIP)
- Programming: Start 2026 - Completion 2027
It is a an extensive project to reshape the residential fabric of the River, which, according to the Region's inventory, aims at the functional and aesthetic upgrading of the area. Although the details of the study have not yet been made public, the overall approach suggests interventions in:
- squares and public spaces,
- sidewalks and streets,
- lighting networks and urban infrastructure,
- possibly at the Sunday bazaar, which is a landmark for the local market.
Meaning and perspective:
Potamos has been the main pillar of the social life of the island for the last decades. The gradual closure of services and the deterioration of public infrastructure had reduced its potential. Its upgrading can act as an «urban breather», not only for residents, but also for the revitalisation of the northern part of the island. It can attract new residents, boost commerce and bring new life to the local economy.
2. Completion and Upgrading of the Municipal Open Theatre of Potamos Kythera
- Implementing Agency: New Metropolitan Attica
- Funding: National envelope of the MFF
- Programming: 2026 - 2027
The open theatre of Potamos, which has remained unfinished or of limited use for years, is potentially one of the main cultural nuclei of the island. The project envisages:
- complete completion of the stage and infrastructure,
- provision for technical installations (sound, lighting),
- enhancing accessibility,
- the possibility of hosting important cultural events.
Meaning and perspective:
Cultural life in Kythera has tradition and dynamics, but lacks adequate and modern infrastructure. The completion of the theatre will give a new impetus to cultural events, attracting locals and visitors alike. If integrated into wider festivals and collaborations, it could become a reference point more widely, even on a national scale.
3. Renovation - Arrangement of the Children's Centre in Logothetianika Kythera
- Implementing Agency: New Metropolitan Attica
- Funding: Own resources
- Programming: 2025 - 2027
The investment in pre-school education and social welfare reflects the need to support young families in Kythera, in an environment where under-generation and the abandonment of the island by young people is a constant challenge.
Meaning and perspective:
Modernising the childcare structure is not just a technical project. It is a political choice in favor of turning around a demographically declining island. This investment can support families who choose to remain in Kythera, in the northern sector.
4. Construction of a Slaughterhouse in Kythera
- Implementing Agency: New Metropolitan Attica
- Funding: National envelope of the MFF
- Programming: 2025 - 2027
The slaughterhouse is a key infrastructure for the agricultural and livestock economy of the island.
Meaning and perspective:
The project will address a serious infrastructure deficit in the primary sector, enhancing the sustainability of local livestock farming. In addition, it can give a new impetus to efforts to standardise and certify local products (e.g. lamb, sausages and sausages of Kythera), creating conditions for the export of standardised products and improving the island's gastronomy.
The Region of Attica with the four interventions in Kythera seems to prioritises the specific needs of the island and respond to long-standing demands: urban regeneration, cultural enhancement, social care and rural development.
The bet now is the implementation with quality, transparency and local - social participation, so that the projects do not remain at the level of mere implementation or symbolism. Kythera, which has seen its population decline over the past decade, deserves a new chance.
These interventions are part of the wider planning of the Region of Attica for its island unit (PE Islands), which brings together a total of 25 projects with a budget of more than EUR 128 million. The redevelopments in Kythera reflect the strategic will of the regional authority to invest in the island regions, enhancing local development.
Total Estimated Budget for projects in Kythera (2025-2027):
3.5 - 4.2 million euro
If the management/survey costs are added, the total amount can reach 4.5 million euro,
It is still necessary to ensure the adequate and timely implementation of the projects, with transparent management, effective participation of the local community and respect for the special character of the island. Finally, it is interesting to see if the new regional governor of Attica, Nikos Chardalias, at the end of his term of office will be able to pass the bar raised by the former regional governor Rena Dourou to more than 20 million euros, while the previous George Patoulis ... no reason: He came, he left and touched almost nothing!

The greatest work that needs to be done is to be able to park without having to enter the center of the river.
The project that will change the life and image of Kythera and will give life and future is the creation of a bus station in Kythera.
