On education and mockery...

«The problems in the schools of Kythera are timeless. We are Tsirigotes, we are not naive». To Editorial of Kythera News.

Welcome to the Greece of 2024.

This is where solving educational problems presents itself as more difficult than finding parking on the River on an August Sunday.

Here the Minister of Education, Mr.Pierrakakis, proudly declares from the safety of the MEGA studio that he solved the issue of Kythera in 48 hours! Yes, you read that right. He solved the problem of Kythera, we just haven't figured it out yet...

We have not understood (or we refuse to come to terms with it) that poor infrastructure and educational degradation are the «norm» in Kythera as well. Should we laugh or cry?;

The situation is now intolerable. In Kythera, students, parents and teachers rightly complain about the mergers of departments and the lack of teaching staff. They recently held a protest. They pointed out that it is not possible to characterize the filling of vacancies with «tramps» and endless overtime as a solution.

At the same time it is noted that nationwide teachers are resigning at an increasing rate. This year alone, more than 500 applications for resignation of teachers from Attica have been submitted and the wave continues. How many more resignations will it take for the ministry to realize that the education system is a bomb ready to explode?;

The government's policy is undermining public education. Instead of proceeding with the obvious solutions (appointments of permanent teachers, new modern schools) it shows small increases of 100 euros to be paid in 2027!!!! Today their salaries are at the bottom of the Eurozone, they have to live on about 776 euros net...

As for the deputies (the «hostages» of history), slowly and slowly the available ones are decreasing, as they either emigrate or are employed in other sectors for obvious reasons.... Scientists, young people, perhaps with family obligations are asked to leave their family home in order to go in October or November to Kythera, Astypalaea and every other corner of our country.

And for those who claim that teachers «they only work a few hours a day», let them consider the hours it takes to prepare for each course, especially the newly appointed. Let them consider why most people work a second job to make ends meet. Yes, you read that right. There are teachers and professors who leave the classroom to work as waiters or even as food servers. Don't forget, people like us are either with a partner and children (those who are «adventurous») or single because they are simply afraid of financial poverty and do not go ahead with starting a family. But they all live in the most expensive country in Europe (Eurostat, according to average purchasing power). As for the accuracy in Kythera, never mind...

Let's be realistic. When public education collapses, the government focuses on mobile... It's incredible!

Even her own MPs in Piraeus stood against her:

Costas Katsafados said meaningfully: «I am not concerned with being pleasant, but useful.». So listen Kyriakos, no more smiles from the MP who was recently banned from the government.

Domna Michalidou (recently expelled from the government) stated that «in her day, the schools worked like clockwork»...

Sure the problems in the schools of Kythera are enduring. We are Chirigans, we are not naive.

In fact the only thing that the government and the MPs who support it «solve» is the hands of the teachers... to resign!

Unless conditions change radically, in 2025 we will remember 2024 as the “good year”. Because if we keep going like this, there will be no one left to teach.

The question is whether families with children will stay in Kythera who are concerned about whether proper and equal education for students can be ensured on our island...

P.S. And let us not forget what we can still hope for from the efficient Mr. Pierrakakis. Now, we await his next innovative solutions: maybe teachers become avatars and teach digitally from the cloud, or is it the Lessons be transmitted via drone directly into the mind of the students? Who knows, maybe the problem has already been solved and we just haven't updated it to reality yet!
