Concluding her introductory statement during the remote briefing of political editors on Monday 1 March, the government spokeswoman Aristotelia Peloni was mentioned in the hunger strike of Dimitris Koufontinas.
Ms Peloni said: «It is obvious that Dimitris Koufontinas, convicted of 11 murders, is asking for preferential treatment. outside the framework of the law. He blackmails with the hunger strike he himself chose. In fact, while never brought his claim before the courts, even though the legal order allows him to do so. He chose to put his life in danger.
Democracy does not take revenge, nor is it blackmailed. The State is obliged to apply the law without discrimination. And it will do so.».
As Ms Peloni stressed, «the blackmail of the multiparty opposition, with which the opposition is aligned, does not concern the vast majority of society, which has other problems, other concerns and other priorities. It concerns a small minority, with which SYRIZA is aligned. Its president, a self-appointed advocate, was quick to join the polyhistos» demand, asking the government to violate the rule of law and change its attitude. And this in the face of a prisoner who has not shown basic remorse for his crimes.".
In closing, Ms Peloni stressed: «Intimidation, terrorizing, forcing the organized State to abrogate its sovereign right to decide how to detain convicts will not pass. Greece is a bourgeois democracy. It will not become a subordinate democracy. Nor will it become a terrorized state.».
