Nearly 200,000 male condoms and 20,000 female condoms will be distributed to prevent sexually transmitted infections in the Olympic village during the Paris Olympics (26 July-11 August), organisers have announced.
«What we see independent of the Olympics is probably an increase in sexually transmitted infections in the population,» explains Laurent Dallard, who is responsible for coordinating first aid and health risks at the International Olympic Committee.
Leaflets will be distributed and posters will be displayed inside the polyclinic of the Olympic Village, located in Saint-Denis, to raise awareness among athletes from all countries. There will also be plans for HIV testing within this polyclinic.
Almost 14,500 athletes and their escorts are expected in Paris in July at the Olympic village. But the analogy between the number of athletes present and the number of condoms to extract information about sexual relations within the Olympic village does not necessarily make sense: a member of the administration of the Olympic Organising Committee (Cojo) confided several months ago to the French news agency (AFP) that certain products available in the village, such as bandages, were sometimes taken away by the athletes.
