The Butterfly Orchid

A small orchid with striking flowers in a lush inflorescence. It owes its distinctive name to the shape of its lip, which resembles a butterfly.
We found it in bloom in eastern Kythira in late February. By mid-March, it can be found almost everywhere on the island. Often, the lip is light-colored, while the mantle is dark.
