On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Kythera from the German occupation forces, the Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias was on the island, representing the Prime Minister at the commemorative events. Accompanied by the Chief of the General Staff, General Dimitrios Houpis, Mr. Dendias commemorated the historic event that marked the beginning of the country's liberation from occupation during the Second World War.
The day began with the participation of the minister and officials in the memorial service and the laying of wreaths at the memorial to the fallen. After the ceremony, Nikos Dendias visited the missile ship «TPC Deyannis», where he exchanged souvenirs with the crew, highlighting the importance of strengthening the defensive power of the Greek islands.
In a post on Platform X, the Minister said: «It is with great pleasure and accompanied by the Chief of the Armed Forces General D. Houpis, I am today at #Kythera, where I am representing the President of the Government at the celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the island from the German occupation forces.» At the same time, he expressed his pride in the historical heritage of Kythera and its contribution to the struggle for the liberation of the country.

Those present honoured the National Resistance fighters who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of the island, while the presence of the armed forces was strong, with soldiers and sailors participating in the ceremonies and paying tribute to the heroic fallen.
