The existence of a new natural gas field has been announced by the Cypriot Ministry of Energy. According to the announcement, the field was identified by the ENI-TOTAL consortium of companies in Block 6 of the Cypriot EEZ and is estimated to be between 2 and 3 trillion cubic feet.
Here is the official statement of the Cypriot Ministry of Energy:
The Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry announces that the «Zeus-1» exploration well, within Block 6 of the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus, has been successfully and safely completed by the consortium of Eni Cyprus Limited (Operator) and TotalEnergies EP Cyprus B.V.
The drilling, which was carried out by the drillship «Tungsten Explorer» at a distance of 162 kilometres off the coast of Cyprus, 5 kilometres west of the «Cronos-1» well and at a water depth of 2,300 metres, showed the existence of a 105-metre column of pure natural gas, with quantities that, according to preliminary estimates, total between 2 and 3 trillion cubic feet (Tcf).
The «Zeus-1» discovery, the third in a row by the licensed consortium in Block 6, after «Calypso-1» and «Cronos-1», has also been successfully tested in terms of its technical quality and reaffirms the promising prospects of the area. Already, the Ministry of Energy and the consortium are examining ways to accelerate and optimise the exploitation of the discoveries in Block 6 of the EEZ of Cyprus, with the results of the new drilling being incorporated, by Eni and TotalEnergies, into the studies they are conducting for this very purpose.
