32-year-old police officer killed after knife attack in nightclub

A wound in the left cervical region is said to have been found by the coroner in the body of the 32-year-old policeman who died in the early hours of the morning, when he was attacked with a knife by a 44-year-old, Norwegian national, in a bar (beer hall), on Katsimidi Street, in Thessaloniki.

According to initial forensic findings, the 32-year-old's death was instantaneous.

According to new information, the victim served in the Internal Affairs Subdivision of Northern Greece of the National Police, the so-called «Indifferent». He was off duty at the beer hall where he was having fun with his best man.

Testimony from patrons of the establishment appears to indicate that the 44-year-old suspect initially argued with the police officer's best man, whom he struck in the leg. The policeman then attempted to intervene but was fatally attacked by the foreigner.

According to police sources, the perpetrator was in a state of intoxication having consumed alcohol.

Patrons called for help and alerted police officers who were in an adjacent building where the riot police are based. The perpetrator was subsequently arrested and taken to the Thessaloniki Security, where he is being held.

The best man of the policeman was evacuated to the «Hippocrates» Hospital for first aid. The offender is detained and will be brought to the prosecutor's office for criminal prosecution.

Tomorrow, the 44-year-old, Norwegian national, who is being held for the murder of the 32-year-old policeman, at dawn, in a bar on Katsimidi Street, in Thessaloniki, will be brought to the prosecutor.

The 44-year-old remains in the detention facilities of the Security of Thessaloniki and the preliminary investigation of the Department of Crimes Against Life is in full swing, with the collection of witness statements, while the amount of alcohol he had consumed is being examined.

According to information, the perpetrator lived permanently in Greece and seemed to be a known customer at the store. The killing took place around 4.30 in the morning and, according to witnesses, it was preceded by an argument between the 44-year-old and the best man of the police officer. Following the verbal incident, the Norwegian wounded the best man in the leg with a knife and then the 32-year-old, who was having off-duty fun in the same bar, intervened, resulting in him being attacked with the same knife.

The policeman, who served in the «indestructible» of the National Police, suffered a wound in the left cervical region, and his death was instantaneous.

Police officers who were in an adjacent building, where the MAT headquarters are located, were immediately alerted and arrested the perpetrator.
