Second place in the world in terms of percentage vasectomies - male sterilization -, is now owned by Australia, as more and more men vegan choose to be spayed or neutered, in order to alleviate the environmental impact of overconsumption.
According to Dr. Nick Demediuk -which accounts for more than 10% of all vasectomies in Australia— there has been an increase among men aged 18–28, and especially among vegans, who are choosing to undergo vasectomies to «reduce the population and consumption.».
«We’ve gone from having two, three, or four children to having just one or none at all, and to undergoing sterilization, because of the environmental consequences that people believe the human species is causing to nature,» explains Dr. Demediuk, speaking to ABC Radio.
«Some people are very concerned about overpopulation. So they limit the size of their families—even without a one-child policy—by voluntarily undergoing sterilization,» says the doctor.
«In Europe—in France and Spain—vasectomy was illegal. »To be precise, it was illegal in France until around 2001, because they believed it constituted mutilation of the male genitalia," the doctor explains.
«However, as time goes by, the approach to this technique is gradually changing in these countries as well,’ says Dr. Demediuk.
«In countries like these in the Latin America, vasectomies are increasing at an almost exponential rate, while in Australia we are seeing an increase, albeit a gradual one […] much slower than in Latin America,’ the doctor notes.
It is worth noting that, according to the Sky News Australia, the percentage of Australians over the age of 40 who choose to undergo a vasectomy reaches 25%.
