Lindy Hop first appeared in Harlem, New York in the 1920s and 1930s and developed with the jazz music of the time. It belongs to the swing dance family and is an amalgamation of many dances that preceded it such as the tap, breakaway and Charleston. It combines elements of both paired and solo dances using African American dance movements and improvisations alongside the typical meter structure of European dances.
