2025 is so far proving to be an impressive year for the meteorological chronicles of Kythera. Based on official data from the National Observatory of the National Observatory of Athens in Fratsia, the island is experiencing a remarkable change in its climate compared to the previous year.
January-May 2025: Unprecedented rainfall - Twice as much as last year
While the first five months of 2024 recorded just 171,4 mm total precipitation, the corresponding period in 2025 noted 295,2 mm - i.e. almost double the volume. Ο February 2025 stood out with 171,8 mm, the highest monthly record so far, peaking in the 34.2 mm in one day (27/2). In contrast, in 2024 the same month was limited to 50.8 mm.
The constant humidity and the frequency of rainfall, especially in winter and spring, make 2025 a particularly «musical» year for Kythera - as rain seems to accompany the daily life of the inhabitants, as our title aptly suggests.
Cooler in 2025 - With the exception of May
Although the January 2025 was warmer than in 2024 (12.2°C vs. 10.8°C), the remaining months up to April were colder, with lower averages of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius.
Ο May 2025, however, showed a temperature jump, with average maximum at 23°C, slightly higher than in 2024 (22.3°C), while the absolute maximum touched them 29,3°C (on 8/5), an example of an early summer invasion.
Winds and weather intensity
Average wind speeds remained almost constant, with 2025 recording average wind speeds of 16.8 km/h vs. 17.0 km/h of 2024. However, the frequency and intensity of the gusts - with a maximum 82.1 km/h in May - show increased volatility, especially in the winter months.
A wetter, cooler island
The comparison of the first five months of 2025 with the corresponding period of 2024 reveals a clear increase in rainfall and at the same time slight reduction in temperature.
The island seems to be going through a phase small climate change, with greater seasonal variability and higher humidity. If the pattern continues, 2025 may be characterized as the wettest year in recent years, transforming the image of the dry Mediterranean landscape into a scene of... a musical, entitled: Kythera sings in the rain.
We await with interest the data of the summer months, in order to see if the «melodic rain» scene will give way to heat waves or if it will continue to write its own... climatic soundtrack.

Above you can see the graph comparing monthly precipitation in Kythera for the years 2024 and 2025 (until May). It is clearly visible extreme increase in rainfall in February 2025, with almost triple price compared to the same month in 2024.
