Η Citizens' Movement of Kythira – Dynamo Kythira is sounding the alarm following the recent posting on the website of the Ministry of Environment of the Department of Protected Areas' recommendation and the final approval of the Special Environmental Study (SES) 7a for the protected areas of Kythera and Antikythera.
According to the announcement, the study classifies the areas into four severity zones:
- Total Nature Protection Zone (TPA)
- Nature Protection Zone (SPA)
- Habitat and Species Management Area (HABS)
- Sustainable Natural Resource Management Zone (SRMZ)
However, the Citizens' Movement points out as «extremely worrying» the fact that, compared with both the initial study and the comments made in the public consultation, the number of strict protection zones appears to be reduced, while the areas included in the strict protection zones are increasing ZERO and ZBWFP - zones where, according to PD 59/2018, the installation of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is allowed.
The organisation stresses that the maps and land use tables have not yet been posted, which does not allow a full assessment of the decision, but it already appears that something different from what citizens knew after the consultation has been adopted.
The post closes with an eloquent question:
«I wonder if there's a pit in the fava bean?»
