Kythera Green: Operation Lakes

Last Saturday, a group of about a dozen volunteers from the Kythera Green Citizens' Movement took on the task of cleaning up the coast at the Lakes. At first glance, the cove seems too small for such an undertaking, but in the end both the cove and the narrow canyon on the other side took several hours of hard work. The Lakes are literally exposed to the eye of the wind, and the north-western weather brings lots and lots of rubbish from the sea, including four god-awful truck tyres, lots and lots of plastic and of course tar - but the three-metre iron spit was definitely of domestic origin! Such was the eventual accumulation of full black bags and other bulky items that their removal suddenly seemed a problem for the volunteers, who had driven down the rough road from Myrtidia in simple passenger cars. Fortunately, last-minute phone calls to the councillors George Komninos and Yannis Katsanevakis solved the problem. Willing as usual to assist in any way with the voluntary initiatives, Mr. Katsanevakis made sure that he himself went to Limnaria the next morning (on Sundays!) with a small truck of the Municipality and loaded them. We sincerely thank him!

Five photographs are attached in a compressed file.
