The history, the present and the future of the liberal party was mentioned by Kyriakos Mitsotakis speaking at an event of DIMTO Peania of NW on the 47th anniversary of the founding of the party.
Present were many ministers, MPs, secretaries and executives of the Southwest as well as the president of the ONNED.
The Prime Minister referred to the the contribution of the party of Constantine Karamanlis to all the great historical choices of the country.
“New Democracy is a party that comes from far away, but it also goes far away. A party that has always put the interest of the nation above the interest of the party. A party which has not hesitated to take on great responsibilities, to lead society in historic decisions, to prescribe developments, to be at the forefront of things and not to be a tailgater.”
He spoke about the party that represents the popular strata over time, firmly putting the national interest above party interests.. In addition, he stood particularly on the forthcoming Congress of New Democracy which has been a pioneer in open democratic processes, inviting all members to actively participate in the processes of the party's institutions.
“We are also the party that is putting into practice my commitment when you trusted me and elected me President of the New Democracy to hold annual Ordinary Conferences. And with the exception of 2020 - where for obvious reasons we could not meet - the annual Ordinary Congress of the New Democracy will be held in the first days of December”, he said.
Referring to the history of the party, the Prime Minister stressed that New Democracy, for nearly half a century now, «is a party of the people» that stands next to the needs of the citizens.
“We have been faced - not only with the global challenge of the coronavirus - but also with significant challenges on our national fronts. In March 2020 we sent a message of determination that the borders of Greece, which are also the borders of Europe, will be protected.”, he stressed, while for the Greece-France defence agreement signed with Emmanuel Macron, he expressed the hope that it would not be a field of partisan confrontation but an opportunity for a great national meeting and unity.
“This agreement is not a success of the government, it is a success of our country,” he said, adding that Greece today is much stronger and economically stronger.
“The growth rate was revised from 3.5% to 6.1%. This includes the Draft Budget. But this, you know, is a number, a number of a year which must - and I want to focus on this because I think this is the focus of our policy - be transformed into a development which will concern every Greek woman and every Greek man individually”, he added: «I will give back to the middle class what Mr Tsipras took from them».
“So today, 47 years later, we honour and celebrate our Founding Declaration, the Constantine Karamanlis, who created this party and is essentially passing on to us - our generation - the responsibility to modernise it, to strengthen it and to keep it at the centre of political developments. Personally, I have no doubt that we will continue to do this consistently and effectively. And I have no doubt, because above and beyond everything else, the strength of this party is you, the simple New Democrat, the simple New Democrat, who have always stood by our party in good times and bad,” added Mitsotakis.
The Prime Minister was welcomed by the President of the East Attica NGO Andreas Glavas and the President of the Municipal Local Organization of Peania Pantelis Christoforidis.
