On January 31, 2022, a producer certificate for a 30MW wind power plant was posted on the transparency portal for the company Eφαρμογές Πυριτίου Α.Ε, owned by KOPELOUZOU. Although this is a replacement of production license 131/2020 with a producer certificate provided for by Law 4685/2020, it shows mobility on the part of investors.
The industrial wind farm in Merigari does not meet any siting criteria as it is located:
1. within the designated archaeological site of LESKA
2. The wind turbines are located less than 500 meters from the settlement of LAZARIANIKON and 1,500 meters from the traditional settlement of Mylopotamos.
3. The wind turbines are located much less than 1,000 meters away from numerous tourist accommodations in the area.
The location of the industrial wind farm at the highest point of the island will cause extensive and multi-level destruction to the island of Kythira.
