Katerina Gogou: The angry poet of Exarchia

«Dooku dooku, the typewriter seems to inspire dooku dooku,» Nicolas Asimos teased her. And he knew that Katerina was also looking for Crocanthropos. But she warned him: «I know they never shoot at the legs. The target is the mind, your mind, right?» «There are many drugs, but heroin kills,» sang Paul Sidiropoulos and Katerina seemed to agree: «I'm talking about heroin because it decimated the children»...

Katerina Gogou born in Athens on June 1, 1940. After approximately 53 years, on October 3, 1993 decides to end her life by taking an overdose of pills and alcohol. An uncompromising man, through his angry lyrics he condemned the pain and misery around him.

«Katerina felt like a trapped animal, constantly persecuted. In the end, she couldn't take it anymore and left... but she left behind her poems, which still speak of her with tremendous power and indelible passion..., according to director N. Koundouros.

From a very young age, she worked in children's theater groups and in cinema, mainly in films by Finos Films. He appeared in numerous films (The Wood Came from Paradise/1959, A Painless Life/1964, Miss Director/1964, The Woman Who Fears Men/1965, What Did You Do in the War, Thanasis? (1971), etc.). She also starred in the films The Heavy Melon (P. Tasiou, 1977), for which she won the Best Actress Award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival, «Paragelia» (P. Tasiou, 1980, part of which is based on her poems) and «Ostria» (A. Thomopoulos, 1984), for which she collaborated on the screenplay. For the latter, she received the State Acting Award and shared the Screenplay Award with A. Thomopoulos.

Her great love, however, was poetry. «What I fear most is becoming a “poet”. Don't lock me in a room to gaze at the sea and forget myself. That the stitches in my veins won't close and that I won't blacken paper and peddle opinions based on blurred memories and news from ERT. That the race that crushed us won't accept me in order to use me. Don't let my howls become murmurs to lull my loved ones to sleep. Don't let me learn moderation and technique and shut myself inside them so they can sing about me,’ he wrote.

From the sweet little girl in the Greek films of Finos Films, Katerina Gogou transforms into a revolutionary poet who begins to write about herself, «out of indignation at evil and out of love for people and life. I felt numb. Communication from nowhere, from nothing. My jaws ached from not talking. And when I started writing, I thought the pen would break. That's how passionate I was about what I wanted to say. I don't know how other people write. I lived and wrote,’ as she said in an earlier interview with the newspaper Eleftherotypia.

Former minister Telemachus Chytiris has called Katerina Gogou «the Mayakovsky of Exarchia Square.» She frequented Exarchia and supported the anti-authoritarian movement in every way possible. She was arrested many times, interrogated, and humiliated.. On March 18, 1991, she wrote a letter to the newspaper Eleftherotypia entitled «You forgot Petropoulos,» in which she expressed her solidarity with the anarchist Kyriakos Mazokopos and the poet Yannis Petropoulos, who were in prison.

When 17N killed two police officers in Pagrati, Gogou received a visit at midnight from two police officers, who broke down the door of her home and took her away as a suspect. An eyewitness had testified that he saw a woman running away from the scene of the crime, and the police concluded that it was her, without having any evidence or being able to confirm any suspicions afterwards. Her relationship with the police had never been good; in 1986, she had even sued the Minister of Public Order because she had been beaten by police officers during a demonstration. «Since they won't let us build our lives, we'll destroy what we have and then something new will emerge.», she stated.
