On the occasion of Labor Day, a day symbolizing the struggles of the working class and their sacrifices for a better future, the Kythira branch of the Communist Party of Greece announced that it would hold an event to honor and commemorate them.
As stated in the relevant announcement, on May Day 2025, at 10:30 a.m., a wreath will be laid in Chora, Kythira, below the Castle. The location has historical significance, as during the dictatorship (1967-1973) it hosted exiled communists, activists, and progressive people.
The announcement recalls the significance of May Day as a day that connects the struggles of Chicago in 1886, the bloody May Day of 1936 in Thessaloniki, and the heroic sacrifice of 200 communists in Kaisariani in 1944. The slogan «Their profits or our lives,» which emerged during the mass strike mobilizations of February 28 over the crime in Tempi, is characterized by the Kythira Communist Organization as absolutely timely.
The local branch of the Communist Party of Greece emphasizes that it is the people who can and must leave their mark on developments, moving forward on the path to overthrowing capitalist exploitation.
In the coming period, the Kythira Municipal Council is committed to highlighting more comprehensively the issue of the presence of exiles on the island during the years of the military junta.
