Two days are expected to pass in Kythira refugees – immigrants who arrived on the island illegally in the early hours of Sunday, October 2.
The 11 families, comprising a total of 47 people, including 13 children and 2 infants, spent Sunday night in the shed at the Kapsali pier, where they were provided with food, blankets, and mattresses by volunteers who rushed to the scene along with Coast Guard officers.
Early Monday morning, the preliminary identification and registration process began, while the latest information indicates that the migrants will remain at the site for a second night.
Food requirements
The presence of many children (several of whom are very young, including two infants) creates specific needs in terms of feeding them. Priority in terms of supplies is given to the shipment of dry food, milk, and juice. The collection point for food and basic necessities is the Kapsali pier.
The history
A boat carrying 47 illegal immigrants anchored in Kapsali Bay, at the point known as “Diakopi” on Cape Trachila, in the early hours of Sunday, October 2.
A Coast Guard vessel and a fishing boat rushed to the scene and towed the migrants to Sparagario beach. Earlier, four people had disembarked on the coast in an inflatable boat.
Port authorities and police officers are at Kapsali handling the incident.
