Institutional bodies are looking for solutions to the problem that tends to grow over time and concerns the uncontrolled presence of wild goats in Kythera.
The Kythera.News contacted Deputy Mayor, George Komino, who revealed that he is close to settling the issue that has been troubling many people, given that these animals are engaged in destroying crops and fields.
Mr Kominos referred to a population of about 7 thousand wild goats, scattered all over the island, with a greater presence in the forested area between Mylopotamos and Logothetianikon.
The problem, for Mr Kominos, was created when the family pens where the animals in question were bred and population controlled were closed. With the closure of these places, wild goats were left in the countryside, scattered here and there, which, over time, multiplied, with the well-known detrimental results.
«The population is not reduced by the rifle», says Mr Kominos. «Nor can a decision be easily made by any body that would classify them as harmful, due to legislation,» he adds.
«Instead, there is the thought of creating a management code for the species by the Municipality, through a contract with animal traders. Traps will be set, the animals will stay for a period in a controlled area and then, will be directed to the opposite coast (Peloponnese), where they will be exploited by the zookeeper there and the Municipality of Kythera will reap an agreed fee per capita. There is also the thought that, when they are caught, they are sent to the slaughterhouse and from there to be consumed.»
In conclusion, Mr.Kominos said that the issue will be discussed in detail, in a workshop to be organized in Kythera, on November 9, with the participation of an official of the Region and a team of veterinarians.
