Against two drones that threatened a merchant ship he put the frigate «Hydra» in Gulf of Aden. As reported by the journalist of the ERTNews, Dimitris Thomas, early in the morning, drones, apparently from the Houthis, flew into the Gulf of Aden and threatened a passing merchant ship. The Greek frigate «Hydra» was in the area and open fire with its 5-inch forward gun equipped to protect the merchant ship. The drones that were threatening it pulled out, they moved away and that ended the incident. The Greek frigate participating in the operation «Shields» continues its normal course.
In particular, according to information, on Wednesday 13 March 2024, in the early morning hours in the Gulf of Aden, the frigate «Hydra» in the framework of the EUNAVFOR ASPIDES operation, providing protection to a merchant ship, fired a gun against 2 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), in accordance with the applicable Rules of Engagement, which were removed. The frigate, according to the same information, is continuing its mission as normal.
It is noted that the Greek frigate «Hydra» is part of an EU naval team in the framework of operation «Shields», which aims to safeguard maritime security and ensure freedom of navigation, especially for merchant ships, in the area where numerous attacks by the Houthi target international merchant ships from October 2023.
