Serious questions about the safety of the coastal road in Agia Pelagia are raised in an official question to the President of the Municipal Council by the head of the municipal faction. «All Together, Kythira – Antikythira», Zacharias I. Souris. The reason for this is the dangerous detachment and cracking of the road surface at a point where restoration work was recently carried out, which, according to reports, not only failed to solve the problem but appears to have worsened the situation. Mr. Souris is asking for clear answers on whether a technical assessment was done beforehand, if there's an official risk assessment, and what immediate steps the Municipality plans to take to protect citizens and visitors. The relevant letter to the president of the Municipal Council, Mr. Kapsalis, follows:
Regarding the dangerous detachment of the coastal road in Agia Pelagia and the recent failed restoration.
On the coastal road of Agia Pelagia, at a point where cement paving was recently carried out to cover existing damage, extensive longitudinal cracking and detachment of the road surface has now developed, which was clearly not present to this extent last year. The situation that has developed today does not suggest a simple surface failure, but a deeper problem, with signs of undermining and loss of support of the coastal front.
The recent concrete intervention not only failed to halt the progression of the phenomenon, but appears to have accelerated the creation of a continuous point of detachment, which extends along the road and now poses a real danger to the safety of passing vehicles and pedestrians. This is a coastal road that's used every day, right next to the sea, and constantly exposed to the dynamic effect of the waves, which makes it clear that it can't be dealt with using piecemeal and makeshift technical solutions.
In light of this picture, it is reasonable to ask whether this intervention was preceded by any technical assessment of the situation, whether there was an autopsy by a competent engineer, and whether even a basic technical report was drawn up to document the choice of the method applied. At the same time, the question arises as to whether the riskiness of the site was assessed after the intervention was completed and whether there is an official finding as to whether the road can continue to be used safely under the current conditions.
Furthermore, it is necessary to clarify what immediate measures the Municipality intends to take to ensure the safety of citizens and visitors until the problem is definitively resolved, as well as whether there are plans for a comprehensive technical restoration of the coastal road, with a study that takes into account sea erosion, the foundations, and the long-term durability of the project.
The current situation does not allow for further delays or hasty interventions. Any inaction or underestimation of the seriousness of the phenomenon could lead to a serious incident, with obvious consequences and responsibilities. For this reason, an immediate, clear, and documented response is requested from the Municipal Authority.
With respect
Zacharias I. Souris
