Visit of EAGME to Kythera in the framework of SAMY II

A team of E.A.G.M.E. consisting of the Head of the Regional Unit of Crete Mr. Ioannis Michalakis and the geologist Mrs. Eleni Tsolaki visited the island of Kythera in the framework of the project S.A.M.Y. II «Systematic inventory of water wells of all uses throughout the country».

During its visit to Kythera, the team of the Hellenic Geological and Mineral Exploration Authority met at the Kythera Town Hall in Chora with the Mayor Mr. Efstratios Harhalakis, the Deputy Mayor, responsible for Water Supply & Sewerage issues Mr. Panagiotis Zantiotis and the Head of the Water Supply & Sewerage Service Mr. Konstantinos Stathis.

During the meeting, the Mayor was informed about the purpose of the S.A.M.Y. II project, the progress of the works, while views were exchanged on the water supply conditions and the problems facing the island. Finally, the intention to cooperate in the framework of updating existing studies that have been carried out in the past by E.A.G.M.E. (former I.G.M.E.) regarding the hydrogeological conditions of the island was expressed.

During his visit to Kythera, the geologists of E.A.G.M.E. started the field work together with Mr. Panagiotis Zantiotis and Mr. Konstantinos Siarmalis, a plumber of the Municipality of Kythera, with autopsies and measurements in the municipal water wells of the island. In addition, measurements were taken in all the springs and wells of the island.

The aim of the project is the systematic and integrated recording of the water wells of each use in all the Underground Water Systems of the country, in order to calculate the quantities of water that can be extracted, both per use (water supply, irrigation, industrial, etc.) and per Underground Water System (UWS).

The results of the Project support the actions of the General Directorate of Water of the Ministry of Environment & Energy (YPE) and aim to strengthen the country's water policy, ensuring the quality and quantity of its water resources, while complying with the obligations arising from European Union Directives (60/2000/EC, 118/2006/EC, and 91/676/EEC).

The project is funded by the Operational Program «Transport Infrastructure, Environment and Sustainable Development» of the NSRF 2014-2020 (2023).
