Epidaurus: Six people arrested for salvaging ancient artifacts from the sea

With the assistance of officers from the Special Missions Unit.

Six individuals were arrested last night by officers from the Security Office of the Port Authority of Corinth, with the assistance of executives from Special Missions Unit.

According to Coast Guard, During an inspection carried out in the sea area of Ormos Polemarchas, Epidaurus, Argolis, it was found that the arrested individuals, aged 35, 36, 38, 74, and 65, had engaged in retrieval of ancient objects from the sea, using a jet ski, diving equipment, and a special metal detection device, in violation of Law 3028/2002 on «Protection of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage in General.».

The Corinth Port Authority, which is conducting the preliminary investigation, seized:

  • ten ancient objects,
  • two passenger cars,
  • a truck,
  • a jet ski,
  • a transport trailer,
  • a metal detection device,
  • a signal jamming device (jammer)
  • and related diving equipment.
