The «Elias» weather is advancing: floods in Trikala

The severe weather system Elias will continue to affect parts of the country with heavy rain and thunderstorms, accompanied by hail and a high frequency of lightning. Showers and sporadic thunderstorms occurred until this morning, mainly in Central Greece, western Thessaly and Epirus.

According to the forecast data of meteo.gr/National Observatory of Athens, locally and intermittently strong phenomena are expected for the rest of the day in the Ionian Sea, western and central Sterea, Peloponnese and secondarily in Thessaly and Epirus. The phenomena in some areas will be accompanied by hail, mainly in western Greece and the central Ionian Islands.

The areas that will receive the highest rainfall today are located in the prefectures of Kefallinia, Lefkada, Aitoloakarnania, Evrytania, Fokida, Fthiotida, Ilia, Achaia, Corinthia and from late afternoon Karditsa and Trikala.

Tomorrow the phenomena will further intensify, affecting more the central, eastern and southern parts of the country. The most intense phenomena are expected in eastern and southern Thessaly, Evia, Sporades, central and eastern Sterea and mainly in the Peloponnese, especially central and northern Peloponnese, which seems to receive the highest amounts of rain. The affected areas include the prefecture of Attica and the city of Athens. Rain and thunderstorms will also occur in several island parts of the Aegean and in Crete, with heavy rainfall in the prefecture of Chania.

According to the rainfall episode classification (RPI), which is applied by the Meteo unit of the National Observatory of Athens, the rainfall episode today is classified as Category 3 (Significant), while tomorrow it will be upgraded to Category 4 (Very significant).

The updated Emergency Weather Bulletin issued on 25/9 based on the latest forecast data, which do not show major variations, provides more details:

More specifically:

Today Tuesday (26-09-2023) locally heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast in the Ionian Sea, the mainland (except Macedonia and Thrace), the Sporades, northern Evia and northern Peloponnese.

The highest rainfall will be recorded:

a) in Thessaly (in the prefectures of Karditsa, Trikala, Magnesia and the southern parts of the prefecture of Larissa),

b) Epirus (in the prefectures of Arta and Preveza),

c) in Sterea (in Aitoloakarnania, Evritania, Fthiotida and gradually in Fokida and the western parts of Boeotia) and

d) in the northern Peloponnese (in the prefectures of Achaia and the western parts of the prefecture of Corinthia).

On Wednesday (27-09-2023)) Heavy showers and thunderstorms are forecast in the central and southern mainland (Thessaly, Sterea and Peloponnese), the Sporades, Evia, western Crete and possibly at times in the western Cyclades, the western and southern parts of Attica and the northern Aegean.

It should be noted that the highest rainfall will occur in the prefectures of Karditsa, in the eastern and southern parts of the prefecture of Magnesia, Evritania, Fthiotida, Fokida, Boeotia, Sporades and northern Evia.

On Thursday (28-09-2023) locally heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast until midday in the Sporades, Magnesia, Evia (mainly the north), Fthiotida and Boeotia.
