The Coast Guard Headquarters issued a press release:
Seventy-one (71) foreign nationals were located and two (02) foreign traffickers, aged 41 and 34, were arrested at noon on 17/08/2022 The two traffickers were arrested and taken to the Kythira Police Station, where they were charged with the crimes of aiding and abetting illegal immigration and illegal transportation of foreign nationals.
Specifically, officials from the relevant Port Authority located a boat of unknown origin in the sea area of Kapsali, south of Kythira, with a total of seventy-three (73) foreign passengers (6 women, 46 men, and 21 minors), who, with the assistance of officers from the Kythira Police Station, were safely transported to the port of Kapsali.
The Second Port Authority of Kythira, part of the Port Authority of Neapolis-Vion, is conducting a preliminary investigation with the assistance of officials from the Directorate of Security and Protection of Maritime Borders (DAPTHAS) at an informational level, while the sailing boat in question was confiscated and the two foreigners were arrested as alleged traffickers.
