«The leader of the official opposition appeared unable to address the major questions of tomorrow and the concerns of today. Despite the extravagant staging, Mr. Tsipras showed that he is out of touch. He is stuck in the past, in a world that no longer exists,» said Yiannis Oikonomou, Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister and government spokesperson, in a statement regarding the speech delivered by the leader of the official opposition at the 85th Thessaloniki International Trade Fair.
«His thinking and his political outlook bear no relation to the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution or to the new world that is emerging. He embodies deep-seated conservatism at every level: economic, social, political, and cultural,» notes Mr. Oikonomou.
He adds: «He failed to take a political stand against the wave of irrationality and populism that pervades the political arena he leads—and which is harming the country in the midst of a pandemic. He failed to present a coherent and convincing policy proposal, backed by a clear and well-thought-out economic plan. Once again, he promised benefits without cost estimates, and once again, debt forgiveness. It was as if the calendar read 2014. Except that today, everyone knows what followed.».
In his statement, Mr. Oikonomou concludes: «The attempt at a ‘new beginning’ was constantly overshadowed by the words ‘return’ and ‘abolition.’ At a time when Greece is taking a giant leap toward prosperity in the future, Mr. Tsipras’s burning desire is to return to power with something akin to the coalition government he had with Varoufakis and Kammenos. That is the extent of his political vision. And that says it all.».
